Demetra George · Hellenistic Astrology Course
This is the single most important distinction for correctly applying maltreatment conditions. Mistakes here cascade through all aspect analysis.
Saturn in Aries (12th) square Venus in Capricorn (9th):
Aries → Capricorn is BACKWARD (against zodiacal order).
Therefore Saturn is in INFERIOR position.
Saturn cannot overcome Venus — only potentially strike with a ray.
| # | Condition | Requirements | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Struck by Ray | Malefic INFERIOR, ray within 3°, APPLYING | Backward ray lands on planet |
| 2 | Enclosure | Between two malefics by degree | No benefic intervention |
| 3 | Adherence | Within 3° of malefic (applying) | Conjunction or close aspect |
| 4 | Application to Combustion | Applying within 15° of Sun | Moving toward the Sun |
| 5 | Overcome by Opposition | Malefic in bad house (2,3,6,8,12), whole-sign opposition | No orb required |
| 6 | Overcome by Square | Malefic SUPERIOR, in bad house, whole-sign square | Requires SUPERIOR position |
| 7 | Domicile of Poorly-Placed Malefic | In malefic's domicile while malefic is in bad house | No aspect required |
| 8 | In 6th/8th/12th Without Benefic | Planet in bad house with no benefic witness | Isolation in difficult place |
This is where most errors occur. The requirements are strict:
"NOT considering relative SPEED... NOT considering DEGREE or ORBS... NOT considering APPLYING and SEPARATING aspects." — Demetra George, L7 Slides
Saturn in 12th squares Venus in 9th. Is this Condition 6 (Overcome)?
NO. Saturn sends a BACKWARD ray (Aries → Capricorn). Saturn is INFERIOR, not SUPERIOR. Condition 6 requires SUPERIOR position.
This is negative testimony, not maltreatment.
When a malefic is in INFERIOR position (backward ray), it can still injure through "striking with a ray" — but the requirements are different:
"Square rays hurled by malefics that land within a 3-degree orb on either side of a superior placed planet can maltreat and injure." — Demetra George, L7 Slides
Conclusion: Condition 1 does NOT apply. Saturn Rx is separating from the exact square.
This condition requires no aspect at all:
| Planet In | Malefic Required Position |
|---|---|
| Capricorn or Aquarius | Saturn in 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 8th, or 12th |
| Aries or Scorpio | Mars in 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 8th, or 12th |
Venus at 15°32' Capricorn
Capricorn = Saturn's domicile
Saturn is in 12th house (Aries, Rx, detriment)
Condition 7 APPLIES
Venus is maltreated by occupying Saturn's domicile while Saturn is poorly placed.
Not every hard aspect from a malefic is maltreatment. Many are negative testimony — real challenges but not formal maltreatment:
| Situation | Classification |
|---|---|
| Malefic square from INFERIOR position (backward ray) | Negative Testimony |
| Malefic trine or sextile | Negative Testimony |
| Co-presence outside 3° orb | Negative Testimony |
| Separating aspect (even within orb) | Negative Testimony |
| Malefic in good house squaring | Negative Testimony |
Condition 6 (Overcome)? NO — requires SUPERIOR position
Condition 1 (Struck)? NO — Saturn Rx = SEPARATING
Classification: Negative Testimony
Condition 3 (Adherence)? NO — outside 3° orb
Classification: Negative Testimony
Condition 7? YES
1 Formal Maltreatment Condition: Condition 7 (Domicile)
2 Negative Testimonies: Saturn square (inferior ray), Mars co-presence (6° apart)
Venus is challenged but not as severely as "maltreated from two directions" would suggest. The Saturn square is real pressure but not formal maltreatment. Her dignities (own triplicity, own bounds) provide genuine autonomy.

| Is aspect within 3° AND applying? | Condition 1 possible | Negative testimony only |
